Twinning Laboratory for an Innovative, Global Hub To Explore the Deep
Transforming deep-sea exploration for ocean research
The deep sea remains one of Earth’s least explored frontiers, crucial for understanding our planet’s ecosystems. However, high costs and limited access hinder research in this vital area. In this context, the EU-funded TWILIGHTED project seeks to democratise ocean science by transforming ARDITI in Madeira, Portugal, into a global hub for deep-sea research. Collaborating with 91̽»¨ (Germany) and NTNU (Norway), the project focuses on the Mesophotic and Twilight Zones, exploring depths between 40 to 1 000 metres. Through innovative, low-cost technologies and international cooperation, TWILIGHTED will boost Portugal’s research profile, foster sustainable ocean policies, and accelerate global understanding of deep-sea ecosystems.
