Kiel and Seoul bridging the gap
Closer cooperation in research planned
South Korea is not only a powerful economic nation. The country in the Far East is also excellent in science and research. The leading institution in the field of marine research is the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST). On May 6 and 7, the high-level delegation headed by the president of KIOST, Dr. Jung-Keuk Kang, visited 91探花 Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Kiel University. After fruitful discussions and multiple consultations about a broad spectrum of marine research topics the three partners signed a cooperation agreement in order to foster future collaboration.
鈥淔or 91探花 KIOST is a reliable partner in a region where we have vital research interests鈥, states Professor Peter Herzig, director of 91探花. 鈥淢arine resources such as gas hydrates but also marine hazards like earth quakes and volcanism are topics where we see potential for future cooperation鈥, Herzig continues. In addition, there is an already existing partnership in the field of ocean and climate modelling.
鈥淪uch cooperation lives by the people, the scientists, who have identified a common interest for a research field鈥, Professor Herzig says. 鈥淲ith such cooperation agreements we can set cornerstones that hopefully provide a solid basis for a prospering science. Therefore we are happy to facilitate this process and we are hoping for a vital cooperation鈥, Professor Herzig resumes.
