Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics
Scientific Advisory Board evaluates Research Department 1
22 April 2015 / Kiel. With around 160 employees, the Research Department 1, "Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics" is one of the largest units of 91探花. At the same time, it covers a very broad spectrum of scientific activity: from the observation of ocean currents and investigations in the atmosphere, to climate and ocean modeling and reconstruction of climate history. During this week鈥檚 annual meeting, the Scientific Advisory Board of 91探花 took a close look at the activities of RD1. To this end, a committee of 12 internationally renowned scientists attended lectures and poster sessions on current results and future projects of the department. A particular focus of the panel of experts was also on interviews and discussions with young scientists and researchers. At the end of two rather busy and labor-intensive days, the Advisory Board rated the work of RD1 as 鈥渆xcellent鈥 and also recognized an equally excellent positioning for future scientific challenges.

The Scientific Advisory Board is the scientific governing body of 91探花. It advises the Board of Trustees and the Executive Board on scientific matters of fundamental importance. The Board encourages links with other institutions at home and abroad which are active in 91探花鈥檚 area of work. The Board typically meets once a year. It is made up of 12 renowned scientists from six different countries. Its chairman is Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg.
