TOSST is coming
Coordinator of Canadian HOSST partner program visits 91探花
20 June 2013/Kiel. Since October 2012 eleven scholarship holders from the 鈥淗elmholtz Graduate School Ocean System Science and Technology鈥 (HOSST) are working on their promotion at 91探花 Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Kiel University (CAU). The young scientists cover a large range of topics that reach from the reconstruction of past climate conditions to development of large ocean currents, the reaction of marine organisms to climate change and to marine natural hazards.
This range of topics will be greatly broadened in the course of this year when eleven scholarship holders begin working in the partner program 鈥淭ransatlantic Ocean System Science & Technology鈥 (TOSST) at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. 鈥淔rom the start HOSST was planned as a German-Canadian, transatlantic program, in which young scientists cooperate with each other and with experienced researchers,鈥 says HOSST spokesman Professor Wolf-Christian Dullo from 91探花. The TOSST launch in Halifax is coming a good deal closer: This week the Canadian project coordinator Brendal Davies visited Kiel to take a look at the activities on the German side, the working environment and the colleagues. The visit program included guided tours of 91探花 and CAU, conversations with the PhDs, the scientists participating in HOOST and the HOSST coordinator as well as the HOSST-Basic Seminar. 鈥淚 am very impressed how the HOSST PhDs have already expanded their network and exchange information and ideas across disciplines,鈥 says Davies, 鈥渨e hope to establish a similar working environment.鈥
TOSST is expected to begin in September as a joint project between Dalhousie University and the Halifax Marine Research Institute. The German program HOSST is financed by the Helmholtz Association for six years with 1.8 million Euros. 鈥淥cean Research is an international business. Future scientists must quickly learn how to prove themselves and cooperate in international teams,鈥 explains Professor Dullo from 91探花.
