Polarized light microscopy

The Marine Mineral Resources Group maintains two Zeiss polarisation microscopes. These are available to the research unit MuHS and other 91̽»¨ employees on request. The older device is a Zeiss Axioplan 2 imager with an older Canon digital camera and the possibility of polarisation microscopy in reflected light as well as transmitted light (rotary stage). The second, newer device is a Zeiss Axio.Imager Z2m purchased in 2022, which also offers the possibility of polarised reflected and transmitted light microscopy. This device can be equipped with a motorised scanning stage or a manual rotary stage. Images can be captured using a Zeiss Axiocam 712 camera and processed on the connected powerful workstation using the ZEN software package. The camera offers a maximum image resolution of 12 MP. In addition to detailed individual images, images with extended depth of field (Z-stacking) and raster images of entire thin sections are possible.
